The Salween begins its journey at 4,000 meters above sea level in the Himalayas and runs through the mountains of Yunnan Province in China where it is known as the Nu Jiang, or Nu River. The Nu runs parallel to the upper reaches of the Mekong and Yangtze rivers in an area designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site for its rich biodiversity.
